The gathering at Ghadir occurred on the 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the 10th year of the Hijra, during the return of the pilgrims from Mecca to Medina. This significant event was closely accompanied by the Qur’an, both through verses revealed during or after the event and through previously revealed verses that the Prophet (s) cited, explicitly or implicitly, in his sermon to the people.
In the sermon of Ghadir, the Prophet (s) referred to more than fifty Qur’anic verses, highlighting both the Qur’anic grandeur of the event and the Imamate of Imam Ali (a). The Qur’an itself thus serves as the best source for establishing this important event. Some of these verses were revealed on the occasion of Imam Ali’s (a) appointment to the Imamate (e.g., the verses of Tabligh and Ikmal), while others were used to support and reinforce the arguments and content of the sermon. From the perspective of Qur’anic sciences, these verses can be categorized into four groups: 1. Verses whose exegesis directly relates to Imam Ali (a) or the event of Ghadir, such as the verses of Tabligh and Ikmal. 2. Verses whose ta’wil (esoteric meaning) relates to Imam Ali (a) or Ghadir, such as the verses “kalimah bāqiyah” and “janb Allah”. 3. Verses that, based on the principle of jurrī, are applied to Imam Ali (a) or Ghadir, such as the verse “al-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm” or verses of praise addressing “ayyuha alladhīna āmanū”.
