The Safavid period is considered the golden age of waqf (religious endowment) in Iran. A set of factors contributed to the expansion of this benevolent institution during the Safavid era. The growth of waqf in this period directly and indirectly influenced other economic indicators, as the value of endowed properties and the financial circulation within this sector were remarkably high. One of the areas that experienced noticeable improvement as a result of the expansion of waqf was people’s livelihoods. At first glance, the relationship between these two issues may not seem very strong; however, the evidence indicates that due to the diversity and wide scope of endowments in the Safavid era, this positive impact was significant enough to warrant independent investigation. Accordingly, this study seeks to examine the extent and manner of the impact of waqf on the daily lives of ordinary people in society. Using library-based data and a descriptive–analytical method, the research attempts to provide a well-documented and reasoned answer to this question. It appears that the impact of waqf on people’s livelihoods was more pronounced in the case of endowments related to facilities providing welfare and public services than in other types of endowments.
