Following the martyrdom of Imam Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī (peace be upon him), various Hashimite groups, each with differing approaches, sought to restore their lost authority. Among them, Āl Jaʿfar—due to their lineage tracing back to Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him), a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), their extensive familial networks, and the emergence of uprising figures such as ʿAbdullāh ibn Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaʿfar (d. 130 AH)—constituted one of the influential factions. They attempted, either independently or through alliances with others, and amid the struggles of competing claimants, to play a role in political developments. Relying on historical sources and employing a descriptive–analytical method, this study seeks to answer the question: What positions did Āl Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib adopt in the political conflicts between the Ḥasanids and the ʿAbbasids? The findings indicate that Āl Jaʿfar’s attempt to cooperate with the ʿAbbasids in overthrowing the Umayyads ultimately failed. Subsequently, they aligned with the Ḥasanids in opposition to the ʿAbbasids. Notably, by killing ʿAbdullāh ibn Muʿāwiyah, the ʿAbbasids had already prevented Āl Jaʿfar from achieving victory in the struggle against the Umayyads.
