Abstract
Jaʿfar ibn Abī Tālib, one of the earliest Muslims and a steadfast companion of the Prophet (PBUH), is recognized as a pioneering and influential figure in Islamic history. He held key roles such as leading the Muslims in Abyssinia, commanding the army at the Battle of Muʾtah, and serving as an effective preacher, earning the epithet Jaʿfar al-Tayyar. Being the brother of Imam ʿAlī (peace be upon him) and due to his devoted efforts in Islam and his social and familial position, he occupies a distinguished place in Islamic history. This study aims to answer the question: How is the personality of Jaʿfar ibn Abī Tālib depicted in general historical sources? The research employs a descriptive-analytical method with a focus on character analysis. Data and information were collected from library sources. Findings suggest that historical sources, in addition to describing his personal qualities, also emphasize his social character, which can be divided into two main sections: 1. Pre-Islamic Period: The Jaʿfar family, his social position, and his reputation as Abu al-Masākīn. 2. Islamic Period: Divided into three phases—Meccan, Abyssinian, and Medinan: Meccan Period: Conversion to Islam, steadfastness, and migration to Abyssinia. Abyssinian Period: Serving as the Prophet’s envoy, leadership, and protection of the emigrants. Medinan Period: Arrival in Medina, performing *Dhu al-Hijratayn*, guardianship of Hamzah’s daughter, commandership, reciting battle chants, and martyrdom as recorded in general historical sources.
